Eventing Times — Copyright & Image Usage Policy

All content published by Eventing Times, including but not limited to photographs, images, video, written articles, features, interviews, reports, graphics, illustrations, designs, logos and other editorial material, is protected by copyright and other applicable intellectual property rights.

Unless expressly stated otherwise, copyright in material created by Eventing Times belongs to Eventing Times or to the individual photographer, writer, artist or other rights holder identified in connection with that material.

Eventing Times publishes material from professional photographers, journalists, writers, contributors, agencies, event organisers and other third-party rights holders. Where material has been supplied by a third party, copyright remains with the applicable rights holder unless expressly assigned or transferred in writing.

All rights are reserved.

No content published by Eventing Times is made available for unrestricted copying, reproduction, redistribution or commercial use.

The fact that an image, article or other material is publicly accessible on the Eventing Times website, social-media channels or digital platforms does not constitute permission to copy, download, reproduce or otherwise use that material.

Copyright protection applies whether or not an image or other work carries a visible copyright notice, watermark, photographer credit or other identifying information.

UK copyright protection arises automatically in qualifying original works and does not depend upon registration or the inclusion of a copyright symbol. Copyright gives rights holders control over, among other things, copying, distribution, communication to the public and adaptation of protected works.

2. PROHIBITED USE OF IMAGES AND CONTENT

Unless you have received prior written permission or hold a valid licence covering the proposed use, you must not:

copy, download or reproduce any photograph or other copyrighted material;
publish or republish an image or article on a website, social-media platform, forum, blog, publication or other service;
distribute, transmit, sell, licence, rent or otherwise make copyrighted material available to another person;
reproduce Eventing Times articles, features, interviews or editorial content in whole or in substantial part;
use images or written content for advertising, marketing, sponsorship, promotion, merchandising or commercial purposes;
use photographs in printed publications, magazines, newspapers, programmes, brochures or other publications;
crop, alter, retouch, manipulate, filter, composite or otherwise modify an image;
remove, obscure or alter a watermark, copyright notice, photographer credit, metadata or other rights-management information;
reproduce an image by screenshot or other means;
use an image or article as part of another creative work or derivative work;
upload an Eventing Times image to a stock library, image-sharing service, content library or other third-party database;
sell or offer access to an image or other content that you do not own;
falsely represent yourself or another person as the creator or rights holder of Eventing Times material; or
use content in a manner that suggests endorsement, sponsorship, association or approval by Eventing Times, the relevant photographer or rights holder where no such relationship exists.

A link to an Eventing Times article does not, by itself, grant permission to reproduce the article, photographs or other copyrighted material contained within it.

3. EDITORIAL CONTENT & ARTICLES

Eventing Times’ written journalism, including articles, features, interviews, reports, reviews, captions and other editorial material, is protected by copyright.

You may share a link to an Eventing Times article.

You may not reproduce, republish or substantially reproduce the article or other editorial content elsewhere without prior written permission.

This includes copying material into:

other websites;
newsletters;
magazines;
newspapers;
press releases;
social-media posts;
blogs;
commercial publications;
event programmes; or
other editorial or promotional material.

Short quotations may in some circumstances be permitted under applicable copyright exceptions, provided that the relevant legal requirements are met and appropriate acknowledgement is given. The existence of an exception does not provide a general right to reproduce an article in full or in substantial part.

4. SOCIAL MEDIA USE

Eventing Times content is frequently shared within the equestrian community. We encourage readers to share links to our original articles and posts.

However, images published by Eventing Times are not automatically free to download and repost.

Sharing an Eventing Times post using the platform’s native sharing functionality is different from downloading an image and independently uploading it to another account.

Unless expressly permitted, users must not download, screenshot or otherwise obtain an Eventing Times image and upload it independently to their own social-media account, website or other platform.

Where Eventing Times expressly permits an image to be shared, any required photographer or copyright-holder credit must remain intact.

Images must not be altered, cropped, filtered or used in a misleading, defamatory, commercial or promotional context without permission.

5. EVENT, RIDER, HORSE & SPONSOR USE

Being photographed at an event does not automatically grant the subject, rider, owner, trainer, event organiser, sponsor, brand or other associated party ownership or unrestricted usage rights in the photograph.

A photograph may contain recognisable people, horses, brands, sponsors, logos, event infrastructure or other third-party elements while the copyright in the photograph remains with the photographer or relevant rights holder.

Accordingly, riders, owners, agents, sponsors, businesses, event organisers and other parties must obtain appropriate permission before using an Eventing Times photograph for commercial, promotional, advertising or other unauthorised purposes.

Where a photograph has been commissioned or supplied under specific contractual terms, those terms will determine the applicable usage rights.

6. COMMERCIAL USE

Commercial use of Eventing Times imagery or editorial content requires prior written permission and an appropriate licence.

Commercial use includes, but is not limited to:

advertising;
sponsorship campaigns;
brand promotion;
marketing;
merchandise;
product packaging;
corporate publications;
commercial websites;
promotional social-media content;
brochures and catalogues;
event promotion;
use by brands, businesses or commercial organisations; and
use in connection with the sale or promotion of goods or services.

Commercial licensing fees are determined according to the proposed use and may take into account factors including the nature of the use, duration, territory, audience, prominence, media, circulation, exclusivity and intended commercial benefit.

7. EDITORIAL & MEDIA LICENSING

Being a journalist, publication, blogger, photographer, event organiser or member of the equestrian media does notautomatically grant permission to reproduce Eventing Times imagery or editorial content.

Editorial use requires an appropriate licence unless a specific copyright exception applies.

Where an image is licensed for editorial use, that permission applies only to the publication, platform, edition, article, territory, duration, format and other terms expressly agreed.

Permission to use an image once does not create an ongoing or unrestricted right to use that image again.

A new licence may be required for subsequent editions, websites, social-media posts, advertising, commercial publications or other uses.

8. ARCHIVE MATERIAL

The fact that an image or article was published some time ago does not mean that it is in the public domain or available for unrestricted use.

Historic Eventing Times photographs, articles and editorial material remain subject to the applicable copyright and licensing terms.

Requests to reproduce archive material must therefore be made in the same manner as requests concerning current material.

9. PHOTOGRAPHER CREDIT & MORAL RIGHTS

Where an image is created by an identified photographer, the photographer’s authorship and applicable moral rights are respected.

Where applicable, the photographer’s right to be identified as the author of a photograph may apply, provided that the right has been properly asserted.

Creators may also have rights concerning derogatory treatment of their work.

Removing a photographer’s credit, falsely attributing an image, or altering an image in a manner that infringes applicable rights may give rise to further legal issues in addition to copyright infringement.

10. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, MACHINE LEARNING & DATA MINING

Eventing Times expressly reserves all rights in its copyrighted images, journalism and other editorial content in relation to artificial intelligence and machine-learning technologies.

Unless expressly authorised in writing by the relevant copyright holder, Eventing Times content must not be:

used to train, develop, test, fine-tune or improve an artificial-intelligence or machine-learning model;
incorporated into an AI training dataset or other dataset used for model development;
scraped, harvested, systematically collected or copied for AI-related purposes;
supplied to an AI system for the purpose of analysing, learning from or reproducing the creative characteristics of the work;
used as source material or reference material for generating an image, article, text or other content intended to reproduce or imitate the protected work;
used to create AI-generated images, photographic reproductions, derivatives or substantially similar works;
used to develop, test or benchmark generative-AI systems; or
reproduced or extracted by automated systems for any of the above purposes.

This reservation applies to photographs, written journalism, articles, interviews, captions, graphics, illustrations, video and other editorial material published by Eventing Times.

The use of automated tools, bots, crawlers, scrapers or other technologies to access or collect Eventing Times content does not constitute permission to use that content for AI or machine-learning purposes.

Eventing Times does not grant any implied licence for AI training, dataset creation or generative-AI use.

This notice is intended to make Eventing Times’ rights and licensing position clear. It does not purport to exclude any mandatory statutory exception or other use that cannot lawfully be excluded under applicable law.

The UK Government’s current work on copyright and AI recognises that copying copyright works for AI training can engage copyright law and that the legal position is continuing to develop. The Government published its latest report and impact assessment on copyright and AI in March 2026.

11. AUTOMATED SCRAPING, CRAWLING & HARVESTING

Eventing Times does not authorise the systematic copying, harvesting, scraping or automated collection of its photographs, journalism or other copyrighted material for republication, redistribution, commercial exploitation, dataset creation, AI training or other unauthorised purposes.

The presence of content on a publicly accessible website should not be interpreted as a grant of permission to systematically reproduce or collect that content.

Any access to the website must remain subject to applicable law and any applicable terms of use.

12. LICENSING IMAGES

Eventing Times and/or the relevant copyright holder may grant permission to use specific images under a written licence.

A licence is permission to use a copyrighted work in accordance with agreed terms. It does not automatically transfer ownership of the copyright.

Unless expressly agreed otherwise in writing, all licences are limited and non-exclusive.

A licence may specify:

the particular image or images covered;
the permitted publication or platform;
the purpose of use;
editorial or commercial status;
territory;
duration;
print run or audience;
digital usage;
social-media usage;
permitted alterations;
required attribution; and
exclusivity, if applicable.

No additional or different use may be assumed from a licence.

13. REQUESTING PERMISSION

If you would like to use an Eventing Times photograph, article or other copyrighted material, please contact us before using it.

Please provide:

the image or content you wish to use;
where it will be used;
the purpose of the use;
whether the use is editorial or commercial;
the intended publication or platform;
the territory;
the expected duration of use; and
any relevant circulation, audience or campaign information.

We will advise whether the requested use can be licensed and, where applicable, provide the relevant licensing terms and fee.

No licence should be assumed until permission has been expressly confirmed in writing.

14. UNAUTHORISED USE & COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT

Unauthorised use of copyrighted material may constitute copyright infringement.

Where infringement is identified, Eventing Times and/or the relevant copyright holder reserves the right to take appropriate action.

This may include requesting immediate removal of the material, seeking payment for unauthorised use, seeking a retrospective licence where appropriate, issuing a formal notice, pursuing alternative dispute resolution, or taking legal proceedings where considered necessary.

Depending on the circumstances, remedies available for copyright infringement may include injunctions, damages, an account of profits and other remedies available under applicable law.

Eventing Times may also seek recovery of appropriate costs incurred in investigating and addressing unauthorised use, subject to applicable law and the circumstances of the matter.

15. UNAUTHORISED USE & RETROSPECTIVE LICENSING

If copyrighted material has been used without permission, contacting Eventing Times after publication does not automatically legitimise the original use.

Eventing Times may, at its discretion, offer a retrospective licence or agree terms for continued use.

Any such agreement must be confirmed in writing.

Where retrospective licensing is offered, the applicable fee may differ from the standard licence fee and may reflect the unauthorised nature, duration, extent and circumstances of the use.

Payment of a retrospective licence fee does not necessarily constitute a waiver of any other rights or remedies.

16. THIRD-PARTY CONTENT

Eventing Times may publish material supplied by independent photographers, journalists, writers, agencies, event organisers, contributors or other rights holders.

Where third-party copyright applies, Eventing Times does not represent that it owns the copyright in that material.

Requests concerning the licensing of a particular image may therefore be referred to the relevant photographer or rights holder.

Users must make their own enquiries regarding the applicable rights before reproducing third-party material.

17. COPYRIGHT NOTICE

All images and other copyrighted material remain protected whether or not a copyright notice or watermark is displayed.

Notices may identify the relevant copyright holder.

Examples include:

The absence of a copyright notice or watermark does not amount to permission to reproduce or use the work.

18. ENFORCEMENT

Eventing Times takes the protection of its intellectual property and the rights of its contributing photographers and writers seriously.

Where unauthorised use is discovered, we may investigate the circumstances and identify the applicable copyright holder.

Depending on the circumstances, we may request:

immediate removal of the material;
confirmation of where and for how long the material has been used;
details of the person or organisation responsible for the use;
payment for the unauthorised use;
a retrospective licence;
appropriate attribution or correction; and/or
other remedies available to the copyright holder.

Nothing in this policy limits any rights or remedies available to Eventing Times or the relevant copyright holder under applicable law.
